The activity on Smile's page on her smartphone symbolizes her intelligence in online communities. They send texts to each other, sharing happy thoughts these thoughts are transcribed in English. In one prominent scene where Cherry and Smile are in split screen, we see how Cherry and Smile communicate with each other through their smartphones. Also, we see a strong representation of women, as there are many female characters given major and supporting roles. There are Japanese titles written on signs and in texts with English subtitles. It is a clever play on expectations.Īs expected in a Japanese anime movie, as all of the cast and crew members are of Japanese descent. In this case, Smile wears her face mask throughout the majority of Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, to protect herself from the cruelty of others. The face mask is what people wear on their faces to protect themselves from disease, cold air, and allergens. Similar to Cherry's headphones, the writers have visualized how we often find creative ways to hide our insecurities and/or insulate ourselves from the world. The face mask is symbolically tied to COVID-19 during the pandemic. She fears people will laugh at her for having braces and uses a face mask to hide them. She is self-conscious about her braces and buckteeth, and having to wear braces all the time. Smile's insecurities revolve around her dental situation. Cherry wears headphones to avoid talking to people. In addition, he is often shy among girls his age. His fear of reciting his haiku symbolizes isolation, keeping personal secrets to himself by forming a wall between himself and other people. The headphones, smartphone, and haiku book are important objects that reflect his introspective loner personality, as Cherry is afraid to share his haikus with anyone. After meeting one day, Cherry and Smile decide to become friends and explore each other's hobbies.Ĭherry is a shy boy who expresses his inner thoughts and feelings with haiku poems. They were great, too, although Beaver felt a bit unecessary to the plot.Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop is a 2021 Japanese Anime movie that is centered around a shy boy who expresses himself through haiku, and a bubbly but self-conscious girl who both share a brief, magical summer. Fujiyama (Koichi Yamadera/Ping Wu) and Bieber/Beaver (Megumi Han/Sam Lavagnino). I also liked the side characters, too, like Mr. To top off for these first two, we do sympathize about what they're going through. She's my favorite character from that movie because of her personality and her buck teeth. Love interest, Smile/Yuki (Hana Sugisaki/Kim Wong), is also really interesting and has this communication of wearing a face mask to cover her braces and buck teeth, which I loved about her. He was a little bit boring and generic (though I can understand that and he's still a great character) until that ending. Our main protagonist, Cherry/Yui (Ichikawa Somegoro VIII/Ivan Mok), he's a nice character with a compelling way of communication, which is through haikus. To talk about the smiles, the characters, they're really great and commiserating. I also thought the theme of communication was nice as it was used with the two main characters. However, we do get to see a bit at the post-credits scene where we see the shadow of Cherry and Smile kissing while the record is playing. The ending was sure nice but it felt pretty rushed. That Cherry said at the festival to show that he loves Smile. One part of the story that I could give out in particular which I liked is that poem I can't really name any example of a great moment because I just liked the movie. It's very simple but it has such emotional moments and as well as some charming moments, too. The plot of someone expressing themselves with a haiku is very interesting. Moving on to the leaves that are hidden, which is in the story, I could say that it's very heartwarming and sweet. Everything about the animation, from the visuals to the palette, Along with that, the settings look very pleasant. The visuals in the movie look lovely to add some sweet flavor to the animation. It really gives out such vibrant and aesthetic vibes mainly because of the palette. The cute teeth and fireworks, which are the animation in this movie is colorful and pretty.
